More Than an Exam: A Race for the Future

Young people preparing for exams need understanding, supportive study spaces, and confidence in life beyond a score.

Every year, millions of young people in Türkiye begin the same journey. LGS, YKS, and similar examinations may occupy only a few hours on a calendar, but represent years of preparation and intense psychological struggle. For many students, this is a race shaping their lives, as well as studying.

A middle school student prepares for high school; a high school student dreams of university. We often forget that at the center are young people just beginning life. They attend school, study in the evening, and take practice exams on weekends for months or years. Behind this cycle lie anxiety, fear of failure, family expectations, and comparison with friends.

Preparation carries a serious emotional burden alongside academic work. Specialists therefore consider it a process of psychological resilience too. Sometimes we forget to listen. Scores dominate: how many correct answers? Which school? Which university? Too rarely do we ask what these young people actually feel.

Sometimes they need understanding, patience, and space to express themselves more than another test book. Studying effectively requires an appropriate setting and motivation. Home may offer noise, distraction, or irregular habits. Students increasingly seek planned, disciplined environments. Quiet spaces, regular practice exams, and structured study can strengthen motivation alongside academic performance.

The hybrid library model emerging in some cities reflects this need. Personal study areas, regular practice exams, and disciplined surroundings become places where students maintain motivation as well as study. The issue is helping young people move through the process without feeling alone. Each exam season, millions face the same question: “Will I succeed?”

Perhaps we need to pause to understand its weight. Examinations concern families and society as well as students. Expecting achievement is natural; remembering their humanity is equally important. The future is built through confident, happy, balanced people alongside high scores. Preparation should therefore provide understanding and support as well as knowledge. Perhaps it is time to ask ourselves: are we preparing young people only for examinations, or for life?
